Spiritual Science of Breath
Breath in Ancient Scriptures

Breath is given immense importance in ancient Indian scriptures. We give below some of the examples of verses wherein breath is mentioned. The simple meaning of the vese may not signify much of the mystical meaning of breath to the uninitiate. One needs to have initiated into the mysteries under a Guru to fully grasp the deeper meaning of these verses.
Following are some examples :
Rig Veda, in the great Hymn of Creation (10:129:2) says of the Absolute: “That One Thing, breathless, breathed by its own nature.”
Rig Veda 1:66:1 - “breath which is the life,”
Rig Veda 1:113:16 - “Arise! the breath, the life, again hath reached us: darkness hath passed away and light approacheth”
Rig Veda 1:48:10 - “For in thee is each living creature's breath and life”
Rig Veda 1:66:1 - “Like the Sun's glance, like wealth of varied sort, like breath which is the life”
Rig Veda 1:101:5 - “He who is Lord of all the world that moves and breathes”
Rig Veda 1:113:16 - “Arise! the breath, the life, again hath reached us: darkness hath passed away and light approacheth.”
Rig Veda 1:48:10 - “For in thee is each living creature's breath and life, when, Excellent! thou dawnest forth.”
Rig Veda 10:121:2 “Giver of vital breath, of power and vigour, he whose commandments all the Gods acknowledge”
Mundaka Upanishad 2:1:3 - “From Him springs forth the breath of life”
Ramana Maharshi : “Pranayama is the control of the body, the senses, the intellect through the breath. Mind is thus controlled and thus dies down with this practice. Mind and prana originate from the same source. By control of breath the mind subsides”
Zen Master Hogen - "Try to combine your breathing with the rhythm of the universe. It will cause you to awaken to the truth that there is nothing but the breath of the cosmos within you, coming from an immaculate origin."
